MM at Mimi and Pop’s house. She has learned she can feed Gus, the Pug, from her highchair. Here she is with her guilty face.
Where did the time go? I just blinked and my baby somehow turned eleven months old yesterday. Wow.
So, not only in the next month do we have her first Christmas and her first New Year’s, but we also have The!Big!Party! to plan for. Busy, busy here with that (the theme is: pink, pinwheels, and parfaits, by the way…more on it later).
And then there’s the other things… changing from formula to cow’s milk, switching from bottle to sippy cup, and the scariest of them all–getting rid of the paci. All suggestions on how to do these three things with as little drama as possible is much appreciated.
This month is going to be a month of exciting (and terrifying!) changes as you can imagine.

Wow … how did that happen? Zeus & Zoe love any meal time around our house because there are always treats for them.
We switched to cow’s milk over gradually over about 2 weeks. They didn’t drink much at first, but now they love it & will sign for “milk.” Sippy cups we did cold turkey … again, they didn’t drink much at first, but got the hang of it. I would introduce a sippy cup if you haven’t already … we didn’t do it as often as we should. Ours still take pacis at nap/bedtime. Ugh. I’m debating waiting until 2 and they can give them to new babies. Let us know how it all goes … bday party included!
MM is so cute
Let me know any good tips on taking the paci away. I have obviously missed the boat on that. . .
My niece is 15 mos. old. She began giving her sippy cups of diluted milk when she was about 8 mos. old during the day time and a formula bottle for naps/bedtime. They spent the summer at their home in Italy so they tried out the Italian baby foods but they didn’t go over well with her so they started giving her regular food. She’d been getting little bites of food since she was 5 mos. old so it was no biggy for her. The last time I saw her (about a month ago) I was feeding her lunch and had her hold the spoon and helped her feed herself. You could see the little wheels in her mind turning about how she needed the push the fork into the food and then carry it to her mouth. She did pretty good. She never really got into the pacifier unless she was teething so she didn’t have to have that removed.
I did talk to my sister the other day and she said she caught Gabriella straining like she had to poo so she asked her if she had to go potty. She took her in and put her on the potty chair they had put out and she not only peed, but poo’d as well. She peed in it the next morning as well. If it lasts, it’s great, but my sister thinks she’ll be bored with the novelty and this time next year they’ll be working on it again.
Wow, I can’t believe shes almost 1! Time has flown by … she sure is a cutie! We’ll be right behind you!
Hey girl! I can’t believe MM is almost 1 but so is my little one too…. it has gone by so fast!!!
I’ve been very fortunate this time around that Michael weaned himself from ALL of that on his own (Kaylee was totally different) but here is what I did with her. . .
paci- take it away during the day to start with. When that is sucessful, loose it at nap time, then work up to bedtime. She wasn’t off it at bed time till about 14m.
bottle- sippies during the day (it helps to use them with milk!) and bottles at night until they have adjusted.
formula-cow’s milk: I’m about to start this with michael, this is what i did with Kaylee and it was great.
I used the ‘next step formula’ for a week- and then started adding in 2 oz of regular cow’s milk to the formula. .. and increase it by 2oz each week, unless there is resistance. it was super easy with Kaylee doing it this way. I started with her at 11m and plan to do this with M and by 12m she was totally on cow’s milk.
Good luck!!!
I did not read though the ideas, but as far as getting rid of paci this is what we did with our older two:
Only at nap and night time for a while, and not to put the paci in her mouth. We laid it in the bed. A lot of the time they did not even put it in. Then eventually we tried without even having it in the bed.
I am pretty certain Madeline is not going to give it up easy, even though she does not use it much when she is upset. Do you think people will really notice if she goes off to college with a paci?
Good luck with all the fun stuff coming up!! They grow too fast!
What a cutie pie! I love her “guilty” face!
Paci tip that I tell parents of my speech kiddos: try cutting the very tip of her pacis off (just a tiny snip so that the paci loses its air). Typically kids will just put the paci down because it isn’t as stimulating to suck on anymore. It sounds crazy, but might be worth a try. I’m a sofie myself so I like this idea as a first approach so that you aren’t technically “taking” it away from her, just allowing her to “give
it up. Good luck girl!
Seeing MM at your parent’s house has me wondering how your mom is doing? I think she must be Super Woman, taking care of the dogs, MM, your dad, the tree farm.
It’s going to be a huge month for you and your family…I’m so excited for you. It’s amazing how quickly it flies by!
We were at the pediatrician’s office and she said, it’s time to start thinking about getting rid of that (the paci). He was 18 months I think. So, we asked him if he wanted to throw it away. He did in the trash there, and never looked back. He asked for it maybe 3 times later and each time we just reminded him he had thrown it away, and it was yucky now. ??? Worked for him. Not sure it’s THE TRICK though.
Nat, just gradually put the paci aside so won’t be on display for her to see. Kind of “out of sight-out of mind” approach .. You are a wonder woman and will figure it all out anyway, Girl !
