I know I’m a hard person to shop for. I know this.
I usually like old things. Rare things. Hard to find things.
Then to top it off my birthday is just 19 days before Christmas. So within one month I have two holidays.
I say all this to say, my mom has been hassling me about what I want. So has C. Usually I brush it off or if I really think about it I’ll ask for something for MM. Like a new pair of Mooshu’s for MM. Or a compact “boo-boo bag” for my diaper bag. And then I get reminded over and over that it’s my birthday or my Christmas. But I don’t know, once you become a mother it’s hard to not focus on your child, you know?
Anyway, finally I figured out what I wanted for my birthday from my parents. A new light fixture from our porch that looked old, but was safe for the damp conditions of our front porch. I decided on this school house light fixture from Rejuvenation in an antique copper finish. Mother ordered it yesterday.
Tonight when C., MM, and I got home for dinner I was reminded of my new light when I realized the current light had burned out. I told him how excited I was about my new present and he got all flustered.
Turns out he was ordering the exact same one tomorrow morning. He even got out his work computer and showed me–the link was saved in his Favorites as “Nat’s Christmas Present”. He said he was so excited because he thought he had me the perfect gift.
And turns out he had. I hadn’t mentioned wanting a new light there in at least a year. And he picked the right internet store (the one that always advertises in This Old House). And the right finish. And the right shade. But, as my grandfather used to say, he was just a day late and a dollar short.
His gesture, and all the thought he put into it, really meant a lot to me. That C.–he totally gets me.

Girl, you hit the nail on the head…you are so hard to buy for but I SO enjoy buying for you. Now, I need another list for Christmas.
Love you forever and always
Nat, Susan’s B’day is in Dec-so she has two big events too ! Honey, Mom’s always think of their children first…even up into our 70′s 80′s-it is not just young Mom’s that feel that way !
I love you, Nat ! Blessings ! aunt margaret
Wow! That’s TOO funny that you and C both had the same one picked out and he knew which one you would want. And I totally relate to buying things for your little one instead of for yourself. I’ve asked for my Diaper Bag and a Umbrella Stroller for Christmas this year. And gift cards, so I can go and buy our monitor! So sad!
